This tutorial will show you the process of migrating a printer and the Printer Administrator account to a new printer. A colleague of mine was tasked with upgrading a network that had Windows XP Pro from 2003 and had many printers. One of the large printing companies also purchased Windows XP Home after Microsoft stopped supporting it in 2014, requiring a complete migration.
For Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 PCs the print driver file and the printer device driver file are different, this is the reason both files are needed by the Windows print server to be able to print as in this tutorial I explain how to connect a Windows 7 printer to a Windows 8.1 printer print server.
There are two ways to connect a Windows 7 printer to a Windows PC. One is to use the Windows XP printer and Windows 7 PC print drivers, drag the file to your Windows 7 print queue, and print with the resulting file. The other would be to use the driver for Windows 7, which should include a generic driver and a Microsoft Connectors driver. Drag the files to your Windows 7 print queue and print. Both options work as effective. However, in my opinion, the latter option is cleaner since it gives you the option to change the print driver that the printer is connected to mid-print. I use the following steps, but the method of upgrading a print driver is whatever the printer vendor and Windows support.
2. Install the printer using the Windows 7 printer and PC print drivers, and select "Use the Generic driver and a Microsoft Connector driver" in the "Select printer" menu. This will make it so you only need to have one print driver attached to your Windows 7 PC to print. If you do run into any problems using the generic driver, or if you find that your printer isn't working properly, you can always install the other Windows 7 printer and PC print drivers. d2c66b5586
