On the Xbox 360, new cars could be downloaded via Xbox Live, similar to Project Gotham Racing 3 and 4's Booster Packs and Midnight Club: Los Angeles's South Central vehicle packs. Some individual cars were available to download for free, while others were paid purchases as part of a pack. All downloaded cars still need to be purchased with in-game money at their respective dealerships before they can be used in the game. There were eight car packs and eight free cars.
There is also a downloadable mode called \"hardcore mode\" which makes the game experience more realistic. It was designed for players with an Xbox 360 Racing Wheel controller. The hardcore mode is free however in the Windows version, and can be unlocked by achieving a higher specific rank.
There were 1500 total beta testers in Atari's closed beta for Test Drive Unlimited for PlayStation 2. At the end of the testing period, Atari awarded 30 of the most active testers with \"immortality\" in the PlayStation 2 version of Test Drive Unlimited. These 30 beta testers were allowed to name one of the non-playable characters (NPC) in the game. Some chose to use their first and last name; others chose to use their screen names. These 30 special NPCs can be found spread throughout the virtual island of only the PlayStation 2 version.[2] Atari and Melbourne House ensured the Beta Testers were given prominent positions as NPCs. Among the play testers were also friends and family of staff at Melbourne House, including staff members themselves, who are included within the different motoring clubs featured within the game. Most were granted President or Vice President status in the car clubs and were put in highly desirable performance cars.[3]

Test Drive Unlimited is an open world racing game in the Test Drive series, and the first entry in the Test Drive Unlimited sub-series. The game allows players to drive a variety of sports cars and motorcycles around a recreation of the Hawaiian island of Oahu that features around 1,000 miles (1,609 km) of roads.
The whole island is accessible from the beginning and after the player has bought his first home and car, he can either drive around and look for events or load up the map and jump directly to a location of a race, a car salesman or other locations - similar to Need for Speed Underground. Every bought car has a built-in navigation system, guided by a woman's voice to get the player to his destination, either pre-programmed in the game or decided by the player.
The Flatout series is the definitive way to play a demolition derby game on PC. The first game includes two main modes, a standard lap race and a demolition derby mode where the goal is to remain safe while destructing other opponent vehicles. In addition, the game features a mode where the player tosses the driver out of the car to hit and reach specific requirements. The second game features similar gameplay with upgraded visuals and physics.
The main issue that most players had with TDU was that it tended to lack the sharpness and focus of other driving games released before and after. Various pieces of content were missing on certain platforms, too, which coincided with a general lack of features which were expected. The games main loop revolves around exploring the island, opening up locations and challenges as you drive around. This involves buying new cars, improving the cars you have, and generally widening the selection of vehicles you are permitted to drive with on the roads.
The game also came with a multiplayer mode that allowed players to race each other, compete in challenges together, or even take on player-made challenges. This allowed players to drive around together and take on the world in a free-roam setting, racing on demand. The world itself was lacking in detail, though, and many found that it lacked the polish and finishing class that one would have expected given the promotion of the game.
Test Drive Unlimited definitely sets this game up well, but the ultimate success of it depends of the gameplay. The good news is that the gameplay is solid with only a few bumps in the road. Most of the gameplay will meet your expectations. Aspects such as the control of the different cars which are rewarding to drive, the different cars handling noticeably, well different, and the AI reacting to your movements all gives the races some flare. Probably the most notable deficiency is it's hard to get a sense of the speed you're driving at. Whether you're going 40 mph or 90 mph, it was hard to really tell a prominent difference.
