Secondary board certification among EM residency leadership. The Western region had the highest percentage of fellowship and or secondary board certification among all levels of residency leadership. There is a low prevalence of fellowship training and secondary board certification among EM residency leadership, especially compared to the other geographic regions. The data presented here may help inform EM organizations and regional EM leaders of the priorities of, and the challenges in the current EM workforce.
Emergency departments (EDs) have been the subject of intense research in recent years in response to ED overcrowding and the increasing number of patients presenting with emergencies. In this study, we sought to describe the key characteristics and priorities of EDs in terms of patient volumes, patient safety culture, patient satisfaction, and the relationship of these factors. An online survey was sent to all medical staff in all hospitals in Alberta, Canada, with at least one ED. The survey consisted of questions relating to the key characteristics of EDs, patient safety culture, and patient satisfaction. Two hundred fifty-four completed surveys were received. There were 228 EDs responding. The average ED volume was 632 patients per month (median=236). The median ED length of stay was 2 hours. The median patient satisfaction score was 7.5 (1=very dissatisfied, 10=excellent). The mean staff perception score for patient safety culture was 7.8 (1=strongly agree, 10=strongly disagree). The most common patient safety concerns were error frequency, errors causing harm, and error severity. In terms of local factors, the top three priorities of EDs for patient volume growth were to decrease wait time, increase access to services, and improve quality of care. In terms of regional factors, the top three priorities of EDs for patient volume growth were to increase access to services, provide better quality of care, and decrease wait time. This study provided important data on the main characteristics of EDs in terms of patient volume, patient safety culture, and patient satisfaction. It also showed that the patient volume, patient safety culture, and patient satisfaction of Alberta EDs were generally high, although wait time and access to services were identified as top priorities.

nearly universal certification among EM residency leadership. The Western region has the highest prevalence of both fellowship and secondary board certification. Considering that the majority of EM leadership have training outside of emergency medicine, it is not surprising that the previous focus on EM residency leadership has been on the United States. A cross-sectional study was performed in November 2011 to describe the prevalence and regional variation of fellowship and board certification among emergency medicine residency leadership. An anonymous web-based survey was created and distributed to the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD) membership in October 2011. A total of 163 CORD member institutions (116 of 176 responding) completed the survey. The survey inquired about fellowship and secondary board certification, regional representation, gender, and length in a leadership position. 827ec27edc
