On the day of the school musical, Sharpay and the Wildcats are seated together backstage. Gabriella and Troy are also in the audience, where they observe the musical. At the end of the performance, as the Wildcats are preparing to take their bows, Gabriella and Troy rush backstage to tell Sharpay that they are leaving the show to get married. As Sharpay confesses that she loves Gabriella, Taylor interrupts, saying that she is leaving the team. Sharpay asks Taylor why, and she reveals that she has been sent back to her old school. Sharpay and Gabriella try to stop Taylor from leaving, but Taylor tearfully bids the team farewell and disappears.
When Troy spots Sharpay in the crowd at a football game, he invites her to accompany him and Gabriella to meet the rest of the Wildcats at a rally for the team; as they arrive, Troy notices Sharpay's impostor features and offers to help her out. Sharpay reveals that she is a West High student, and although she has been invited to join the Wildcats, she declined to do so on principle.
The next day, Troy finds a tape in his mailbox, and he and Gabriella learn that Sharpay was the one who sent the tape, apologizing for impersonating Gabriella. Troy and Gabriella are later surprised to discover that Sharpay has asked them to be in a kissing scene together at the end of the musical.
