The methodology of describing a case study is well known, and I have used this approach in a number of publications, notably with reference to telepsychiatry [37], and in an NHS Trust profile [38]. To summarise, the case studies in this study were identified from a selection of NHS Trusts in England, with the aim of understanding the impact of the NHS Constitution, the Local Services Agreement, the Integrated Care Fund and the Agenda for Change on the quality, access and outcomes of mental health and addiction services in the NHS. The case studies were selected on the basis of being selected NHS Trusts which had a relatively high level of involvement with the NHS Constitution, Local Services Agreement, Integrated Care Fund and the Agenda for Change. Furthermore, the case studies had to have a range of inpatient experiences. They also had to include a range of policies and processes that were being developed with respect to mental health and addiction services, and there had to be a broad range of views about the processes being developed. Twenty-four case studies were included in the study, including six inpatient case studies, and ten community case studies. Ethical approval was obtained from the University of Central Lancashire Ethics Committee. The case studies have been reported in some detail in previous publications [39, 40]. They will be described further in this article.
