SQL Server Management Studio
SQL Server Management Studio is a toolset that provides a consolidated management tool with a comprehensive set of tools. The toolset includes the graphical interface, Server Configuration Tools, Resource Governor, Replication Manager, Replication Manager, and more.
You can also start SQL Server Management Studio in a different mode. For example, the SQL Server Data Tools provides an integrated environment for managing SQL Server databases. You are also able to start SQL Server Management Studio as a standalone tool. This mode is useful if you want to run SQL Server Management Studio, but not interact with a database. In this mode you are presented with a command prompt window.
The SQL Server Management Studio offers several different modes of operation. The basic mode is Management Studio. When you start the Management Studio, you are presented with a window that contains several tabs. Some of the tabs are location-based, such as Server Manager, File Explorer, and the Object Explorer. Other tabs are general, such as Query, Business Intelligence, Reporting Services, Configuration, and Tools.
The Management Studio toolset is used by SQL Server 2005 for both development and management. The SQL Server 2005 Development Toolset consists of SQL Server Management Studio, Management Data Warehouse, and SQL Server Management Objects.
Management Data Warehouse
Management Data Warehouse is a new management tool that is designed to help you manage several SQL Server databases. MDW consists of several tools for creating, manipulating, and monitoring databases, as well as for analyzing database performance.
Replication Manager
Replication Manager is a set of tools that provides you with centralized control over the configuration, monitoring, and maintenance of distributed SQL Server replication. Replication Manager gives you a single view of the replication topology and allows you to manage the replication configuration.
Besides query and schema editing, there is a variety of tools that are useful in the SQL Server environment. Some of these tools are familiar to DBA's, but some you may be less familiar with. Some of these are included with SQL Server, others are available as third-party add-ons. Some of these tools are fairly general, some are specific to SQL Server.
