This book is a good text for any aspiring pre-service mathematics teacher. The Geometry of Arts and Science and Tangrams are incredibly useful resources to have. They provide a lot of variety in terms of location and the concepts presented.

The Geometry of Arts and Science and Tangrams are very useful as resources to teach the basics of geometry to elementary students. In this textbook, the author also includes a very useful section on Geometry Tools for Teaching that I found particularly useful. One of the best things about this book is that it covers the concepts in a much more concise and accessible manner. I learned a lot of geometry from this textbook and found the explanations to be very well put together.

The structure of this book is good. It starts with some general intro topics, and then goes into more specific topics. It's hard to pick a favorite topic. I liked the textured descriptions of the topics, many examples, and solid explanations. However, I do think it could be improved by providing more examples. The author uses a lot of examples, but many were simply pictures or shapes, without a description. Additionally, I would have liked to see some more exercises or activities. The last few topics are extremely brief. This textbook is also very timely and current, and it seems to have been updated from the last edition, which is good. It's easy to tell when one example ends and another begins, although index/or glossary and a system of links from the table of contents would be greatly appreciated. The first part of the book looks at plane geometry, and the second part of the book looks at solid geometry. The Geometry of Arts and Science and Tangrams were so informative with fun activities. I'm looking forward to looking back at this book when I'm teaching high school.

How this book compares to other geometry books is that it offers more examples and activities. I like how it separates the geometric construction (tangram, diagram, coordinate plane, etc) and mathematical explanations (dots, x's, y's, plus signs, etc). Also, it presents more examples of geometry in a fun way. I also liked that the author used the Peano axioms and the formal definition of a function to explain addition. It's great that they were clear enough to understand but not so detailed that they are difficult for a beginner.

This textbook has a solid foundation and is well-organized for it's intended audience, the elementary mathematics pre-service teacher. This text will help build conceptual understanding of mathematics that will lead to procedural fluency for teachers.

This textbook goes into depth about different mathematical concepts that are important for elementary school teachers to understand in teaching mathematics. However, the text is missing a focus on statistics and probability, which are key areas of...read more
