He coached 8 different Tony Award winners in his 12-year career. Some of the actors he coached are: Russ Abbot, Frances Barber, Jack Anyon, David Bowen, Emanuel Davis, Natalie Dormer, Gary Dignam, Blair Fitzgerald, Tennille Hensley, Nathaniel Parker, Frances Ruffelle, Robert Wisden, Natasha Yar and Lorna Patterson. On each occasion, he found it helpful to begin with a thorough study of the work before moving on to the coaching aspect. He recommended two books by Paul Schmidt as a starting point: Tony n' Tina's Wedding (1981) and Rainbow (1984).
Author Janis Kearns-Kilgannon described his method as constructive and organized, and once he had become comfortable with the material he would set about the task of coaching it. He would often revisit rehearsals, and would also seek to follow the natural dramatic development of the text. He also took pains to avoid being overbearing and would re-write speeches before delivery and encourage the actor to make small changes while in rehearsal so that the performance was “easier to take home to work on”. Often, he would be the first point of contact for new playwrights who lacked the confidence to approach agents and theatre directors. This would provide him with the opportunity to sell the project as well as share his insights and practical experience. His coaching techniques seem to have left a lasting impact on many of his pupils. After her Broadway success in 2002, Frances Ruffelle said to the Los Angeles Times in March 2014: “…was the second half of my career. My first half, especially in the early ‘90s when I was a kid and fresh out of school, was working on projects and learning. He’s been an artful influence and I’m very grateful.”
Darnell created a box without a lid, and inside he placed a bottle of wine and a highball, which he lit on fire. He informed the players he was a good flamer, and that they could also use the highball. The players discussed how to use the highball, and Darnell gave them a few suggestions, and then they asked him what position was he in. d2c66b5586
